The Victorian Christmas

Visit the Christmas parlour and learn about the traditions of Christmas past. A chance to compare the clothing of rich and poor Victorian Children. Toys are looked at in detail with an opportunity for the children to play with the toys.

The Victorian Schoolroom

Become part of the classroom experience, by dressing up in costume and attending a typical lesson which reflects the attitudes of Victorian schooling.

Paradise Mill / SilkMuseum, Park Lane

Tour the mill and learn about silk in Macclesfield, weavers' lives and working conditions. The Silk Museum located in the former Macclesfield School of Art offers workshops on weaving  OR William Morris / printing.

Object Handling

Uncover the world of the ancient Egyptians by handling quality reproductions of Egyptian artefacts.

Papyrus Making

Create a piece of papyrus using the method used by the Egyptians over 3000 years ago. Then draw an Egyptian design on a piece of dried and prepared papyrus.

Mask Making

Create a mask of Anubis, the embalming god. Decorate the mask with Egyptian designs.

The Billeting Office

Visit the Billeting Office and discover what it would be like to be evacuated to Macclesfield during the Second World War.

Investigate Second World War objects and discover their uses. Find out about silk escape maps and be a secret agent!

Make do and Mend

Learn about the salvage operation and recycle old rags into ‘rag rugs’ which can be taken back to school.

Science and Silk Experience

Be a scientist for a day in our Bombyx Boffins Workshop - explore colour, test fibres and use microscopes to examine different fabrics.  Solve problems in Fred and Millies Challenge and visit our re designed Gallery (Spectrum) to see live silk worms (May - October).  Learn about natural dyes, colour and light and try some weaving.
