The Museum has an extensive and useful library with a vast range of reference material. The Library contains books relating to all aspects of the silk industry, textiles in general, costume and local history.
There are also surveys which have been compiled for the 120 mills and dyehouses in the town, as well as photocopies of maps of the Macclesfield area which are generally available in the Cheshire Record Office such as Enclosure maps of 1804 and Cawley's map of 1838. The museum has an original set of the 1:500 Ordnance Survey maps of Macclesfield for 1871. (an interactive disc of the maps is available from the Museum Shops) .
Other materials available include a photographic archive of approximately 20,000 images of Macclesfield and an oral history file comprising three hundred interviews. Transcripts of the majority of these have been produced.
